PART 1
MATCH REPORT (29 September 2005)
Lokomotiv Plovdiv 1 Bolton Wanderers 2 (agg 2-4)
Report by Bob Anderson
Our 1st adventure starts at 3am on the 28th September 2005 at the Boot and Shoe, Bon Chaunce take us to the airport, luckily no aeroplane hire available due to Gerry's absence.
Our flight is over one hour late but nobody seems bothered, we even get Alex to the plane without alcohol. Coached to the hotel and get booked in very quickly allowing for early drinks just what all athletes need. We all go for a meal and drinks and all thank Alan for his efforts, unfortunately he lost some hair with all the worry. In bed late with too much alcohol even whistling Warren with his gift from a Plovdiv fan, but good 1st day.
Match day and the sun is shining, early drinks compulsory before dispatch rider brings message Sam and Sammy are having coffee in the bar next door, some decide to join them.
Better is to follow mid afternoon Sam and the team walk down the promenade chatting and having photographs with the supporters, everyone relaxed. What a PR exercise, first class!
In ground early, relatively quiet so our intrepid reporter goes searching for a collector's item something as scarce as Nessie a Plovdiv shirt, mission accomplished. The only problem with our trip was the total lack of souvenirs not even a programme!
At 6pm what we had all been waiting for happened but the 1st half is uneventful with no threat of the all important away goal.
The worst happens Stelios loses the ball and Plovdiv score a cracker. Fortunately Uncle Sam gets his substitutions spot on, Davies and Nakata change the game. Your reporter deserves to be reprimanded for taking a comfort break when the equaliser goes in; luckily there are 1550 witnesses to confirm the goal.
From this point the tie is not in doubt as we take control of the last 10 minutes and seal it with a wonderful goal set up by Davies and finished in style by Nolan.
Fast tracked at the airport and return to rainy Manchester 12.30am Friday. Tired but our first European adventure was well worth it, let's hope for many more!
(Watch out for pictures from Bulgaria appearing soon in the photo gallery!)
MATCH REPORT (24 September 2005)
Bolton Wanderers 1 Portsmouth 0
Report by John Holden
Was this another triumph for "route one football"? Was it a victory for negative tactics? Well, everyone will have their own opinions but what is certain is that Bolton gained another 3 valuable points. Fourteen points from seven games, especially after such a shaky start is a magnificent achievement and the latest win came through a great goal from 'Nobby' Nolan. The bicycle kick, acrobatically executed, was a joy to behold and would be played 'ad nauseam' on TV if it had been scored by Mr Angry Rooney, Ruud Van Mistletoe or London's own Terry henry (Thierry Henry - I know how to spell!). Bolton players never get such extreme coverage but those who were at the Reebok won't mind beacuse we know how good a goal it was.
To the match itself. I thought it was a reasonable game that we deserved to win. Sure, we had some nervy moments at the back (What happened to Tal's distribution in the first half?) and a better team might have punished us. However, with a bit more sharpness up front we could have scored 3 or 4.(how can aplayer score such a fabulous goal and then miss a sitter like Nolan did?). Kevin Davies worked so hard, yet again, but was still far from clinical in front of goal. Gardner was often too far up field so his electric pace was negated. Nevertheless, we troubled Pompey's defence on a number of occasions and we played good football at times.
Given that we were without Campo, Stelios and Diouf, plus Speed for the most of the match, then this was a pretty positive outcome. But the big positive was the emergence of Nakata. He looks a tremendous prospect and with a bit more premiership experience he could prove to be a fantastic acquisition.
Two negatives to finish on, though. When will Sam realise that Henrik is only an emergency full back? Sooner or later someone is going to take him to the cleaners. Secondly, our squad is already looking a bit thin, especially in defence and the defensive midfield position. I hope this doesn't cost us later on in the season.
Good Luck to the Whites in their forthcoming games in Europe and at Wigan.
MATCH REPORT (18 September 2005)
Manchester City 0 Bolton Wanderers 1
Report by Jim Aspin
Wanderers took 3 great points against Manchester City on Sunday 18 September. The first half was a fairly even affair with both sides defensively doing well to keep the opposition out. City came closest on two occasions and were unlucky when both Musampa and Barton hit the woodwork. The half time score of 0 - 0 certainly better for Sam than for Stuart!
The second half began for the Wanderers with a change of personnel and Campo replaced Faye and immediately had a positive effect, showing his class passing and guile. City came out however and showed just why they have had such a good start to the season and why Stuart Pearce picked up Manager of the Month - putting Bolton 'on the rack' for long spells. They again came close to scoring, striking both the bar and the post 3 more times! Some luck (and also some fantastic fingertip saves from Jussi) kept the score at 0 - 0. City continued attacking but with the introduction of Gardner and Nakata, Wanderers started to absorb this pressure and show more of the form that they are capable of. Pederson was instrumental in much of Wanderes play down the left flank and in time added on, he chased a through ball, flicking it over the head of Dunne who inexplicably handled the ball. This gave Gary Speed the opportunity to slot home a well taken penalty and put the Wandereres 1 - 0 up with virtually the last kick of the game.
Wanderers were lucky but there have been times when we have been on the receiving end of a 'smash and grab' so unlucky City - but well done Wanderers for 'digging in!'. |
